Staffan Öfwerman

Singer, musician and songwriter from Stockholm, Sweden. Staffan was a touring and recording musician with Roxette for six years in the late '80s and early '90s, performing on stages across the globe and contributing to some of the era's biggest albums. He has since released his own music and published his autobiography.

I added multiple vocal overdubs to this track, and my high-pitched voice is most prominent in the part where the lyrics go "Can't let go" (around 01:40). In addition, I provided backing vocals along with Per and Marie on the chorus for the "Every time you leave the room" parts.

The music on this track, which was released in March 2023, is a collaboration between myself and Angie Kuske, who wrote the lyrics. I played all the instruments and created every sound on the recording. I also took on the roles of recording engineer, mixer, and producer to bring the song to life.

This one was recorded in the '90s, but not released until 2022. On this track, I provided lead vocals, acoustic drums, harmonica, and keyboards. Most of the recordings were done in the first take, which gives the track a lot of live performance feelings.

On this track, I collaborated with Per, Marie, and Vicki Benckert for the backing vocals, and I did a lot of shouting, particularly towards the end of the song. Those familiar with my voice will easily recognize it in these parts.

ZZAJ — Single
This song was a B-side on a single and possibly included on one of the albums. I arrived at Soundtrade Studio in Solna, just outside of Stockholm, to record my part. The band had already played their portion, and Billy Bolero wanted me to play some soft jazz-type piano on the track. Since I am self-taught and not a proper piano player, it was pretty strange to sit alone in front of a grand piano in a large studio room and hear the track in my headphones. I improvised all of it while hearing the track in my headphones, with no chords, score, or anything else to guide me. The final recording likely used the first or maybe the second take, and it was all done in one take.

Daddy's Little Boy
Grand Pop Station — Single
I wrote this song in the 90s, and later my bandmate Gunnar By-Skoglund helped me with it. We recorded a demo, but it was never released. Years later, I formed my band Grand Pop Station with some friends. This single was our first release, and I am the lead vocalist and played all the keyboards (except the Hammond organ). I recorded, arranged, and mixed it in my newly built home studio, Red Room Studio, around 2009. It also features a fantastic guitar solo by Per Hesselrud.

ZZAJ — Single
During a rehearsal for a series of gigs in the UK with the band 1, 2, 3, guitarist Billy Bolero asked me to stay afterward and try out some new material with a new singer named Anna Nederdal. In the rehearsal room, the three of us played this song, and Billy asked me to play it with a feel similar to that of singer Sade's music. We later recorded it in a studio, and it became a small hit in Sweden, receiving a lot of airplay. On this track, I play the electric piano, clavinet, and synth flute, and my own created Yamaha DX7 sounds were used in a sequenced loop in the background.

This Roxette track was originally called "Hocus Pocus" on the first cassette I received from Per Gessle before heading to the studio. It was later included in the soundtrack for the Mario Bros movie. On this song, you can hear me providing backing vocals.

Chris Jobe — Single
This was a project produced by me and Gunnar By-Skoglund (aka Woodgrove/Ofwerman). I programmed and sampled a lot of sounds, including farts and burps, and recorded it with my own voice, but we wanted a girl to sing this one. So, Gunnar found Chris Jobe (Kicki Jobe) in his neighborhood, and we recorded it in the home studio at Gunnar's place. Gunnar and I also shouted "Hey!" in the background.

We Take Care
The Breeze — Single
"The Breeze" was a duo consisting of myself and Gunnar By-Skoglund. We played all the instruments ourselves and had a lot of fun recording the music. The lyrics to this song were written on pieces of paper – we wrote one-liners and threw all the pieces up in the air, then tried to make lyrics out of the pieces they landed next to. I sang lead vocals and played many of the instruments. I also wrote most of the music and lyrics for the chorus, which we both put together to create a complete song. On this recording, there is also a real bagpipe played by Ulf Schönberg. When I wrote the music, it happened to be in the same key as a bagpipe plays, although I didn't know this at the time. So it was just pure luck, but a lot of work went into tuning the tape machine and the bagpipe after the song changes key at the end.

Roxette again (a lot on this playlist). I did the backing vocals, and the track was recorded in the EMI studio outside Stockholm, Sweden, like many of the Roxette tracks were back then. In the outro of the song, you can hear me with Per and Marie, and possibly Vicki Benckert, although I'm not sure if she was on this track.

This is a live recording from Sydney, Australia. I play keyboards and percussion and backing vocals. The keyboard parts I play are the brass part in the middle 8 around 2:48 and the high notes in the choruses during the end. The rest is played by my brother Clarence, who is the main keyboard player.

The first single released by Swedish group Stilmord on Polar Music, in 1982. The music was written by me and the lyrics by Keith Almgren. I was also the lead singer and played piano on this track. Warner Music re-released the track digitally during the summer 2021 together with other songs recorded by the band back then.

This is a song that was written for The Breeze and also released by The Breeze. A couple of years later, I re-used the song with my band project Grand Pop Station. This one is recorded in my old home studio, and here you find me on lead and backing vocals, together with the band members as well. I'm playing all the keyboard parts, and I am also producing the recording. There is also a funny low budget video on YouTube for the song which I edited and directed. The video was shot in Stockholm, just around the corner from where I live nowadays.

Roxette — Don't Bore Us – Get to the Chorus!
This song was recorded a couple of years after I wasn't in Roxette anymore. They wanted a children's choir and since I was the one with the oldest kids, Clarence, who was the producer, called me and asked if I could arrange a group of kids singing the chorus. I rehearsed with friends of my daughter, Jackie, and recorded them one by one to find if they all could sing the part. And they all did a great job. So we went to the studio one night after school and recorded the vocals.

When my first solo single was released, it was a song called Young, written by Per Gessle. It was the first single ever released on his brand-new label, Jimmy Fun Records. As a B-side, I wrote Time Bomb. But on this new recorded version, released August 2020, I'm playing all the instruments and recorded the track on my own. So this is the same song, but a new recording and using some of the retro sounds to take you back to the good old days.

This is just another version of the song released as a CD with The Breeze. In this version, there are only me and Gunnar. No backing vocals by the girls. The backing vocals are only the two of us. And the computerized voice in the beginning is made by me with an old speech program on my old Atari 1040ST computer. In the middle part of the song, I found a synthesizer in the studio with some nice string sounds, so I arranged some string parts played by me on this version.

Not much you can call lyrics on this one. The wild man shouting "A-ri-tiii" was sampled from a voice sample CD. It added a little humor to the song.

This song was only released on the Swedish version of the Joyride vinyl album. I was told during the time of the release, a lot of vinyl albums were imported from outside of Sweden to make them cheaper. So one thing to get around this problem for the record company, was to record a unique version for those buying the local version. So this song was at the time only released on the Swedish version of the album. It's me on backing vocals. A lot of "Na-na-na-na."
